About

Dr. Sophie F. Peeters is a board-eligible neurosurgeon with extensive training in the full spectrum of brain and spine surgery. Born in Belgium and raised around the world, she is fluent in French, Dutch, Spanish, and English. Her global upbringing shaped her passion for medicine and her commitment to making neurosurgical care accessible to patients everywhere.

Dr. Peeters completed high school in Houston at the Awty International School where she passed her International Baccalaureate with highest distinction. She subsequently attended Rice University, where she competed in Division I Track and Field as well as Cross Country as part of the Rice Owls team. She graduated summa cum laude with a double major in Psychology and Sports Medicine and a minor in Cell Biology and Biochemistry. She went on to earn her medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, graduating with a distinction in Global Health for her clinical outreach and research in France, Cambodia, and Indonesia with a thesis focused on Traumatic Brain Injuries. During medical school, she also founded and led an annual outreach service trip to Haiti, building on her long-standing dedication to global health.

Her neurosurgical training began at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she completed residency and conducted NIH-funded research on the use of cold plasma as a potential treatment for brain tumors as well as immunotherapy research for malignant gliomas. While at UCLA, she also pursued a fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology, specializing in the care of brain and spine tumors and leading the institution’s multidisciplinary Brain Tumor Board to ensure patients received the most patient-centered and comprehensive treatment plans.

Dr. Peeters then advanced her subspecialty training with a second fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the world’s leading cancer center. There, she focused on open and endoscopic skull base surgery, refining her expertise in minimally invasive, microscopic, and image-guided surgical techniques. She is also fully trained in advanced technologies such as Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) for brain tumors, as well as stereotactic radiosurgery for brain and spine tumors.

Today, Dr. Peeters is proud to be part of the Neurosurgical Group of Texas, where she treats a wide range of neurosurgical conditions, including brain and spine tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, semicircular canal dehiscence, Chiari malformations, degenerative spine disease (such as disk herniations, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and radiculopathy), spinal fractures, and peripheral nerve disorders including carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve sheath tumors.

Dr. Peeters believes deeply in patient-focused, individualized care. Whether through surgery, diagnosis, counseling, or collaboration with other specialists, her priority is always to guide patients toward the best path for their health and quality of life.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Peeters enjoys adventure travel, running, hiking, cycling, and tennis, but most of all values time spent with her husband—an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Houston Methodist—their two sons, and family and friends.
